Voice cloning scams: safety steps and insurance questions

Verify through a number you already trust

The FTC warns that scammers can use AI to imitate a relative's voice. End the suspicious conversation and contact the person using a number you already know. If you cannot reach them, check with another trusted relative or friend. An urgent request to send money is a reason to slow down, even when the voice is convincing.

If money or account access may be affected

Contact the relevant bank or payment provider through its official channel promptly. Preserve the messages, payment details and a short timeline for the appropriate provider or investigator. The FTC accepts scam reports through ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Use IdentityTheft.gov for identity recovery information if personal information has been misused.

Do not post account numbers, identity documents or recordings containing private information in a public forum or a marketplace profile.

Ask precise insurance questions

• Does my current policy or service include identity recovery assistance?
• Is a deceptive, voluntarily authorized transfer treated differently from an unauthorized account transaction?
• Which expenses or losses are included, and what limits, deductibles or exclusions apply?
• Who should I contact to report an event, and what records do they need?
• Does the protection apply to other household members?

A realistic cloned voice does not, by itself, establish coverage. A licensed professional and the relevant insurer must review the actual facts and terms.
