What is AI insurance?

AI insurance is a broad term for insurance that may respond when the use, development or deployment of artificial intelligence creates a business loss or liability. It is not one universal policy. Depending on the business, relevant protection can come from specialized AI liability products or from established commercial policies such as cyber, technology errors and omissions, professional liability or other coverage.

Why businesses are asking about it

AI is moving from a writing assistant into customer service, software products, automated workflows and autonomous agents. That creates questions traditional insurance programs were not always written to answer clearly: who is responsible when an AI system gives a bad answer, exposes information, infringes intellectual property, takes an unauthorized action or interrupts operations?

Common AI-related risk categories

  • Incorrect outputs: hallucinations, recommendations, decisions or generated information that causes harm.
  • Privacy and data: accidental disclosure, misuse or processing of sensitive or confidential information.
  • Intellectual property and media: allegations involving copyright, trademark, advertising or defamation.
  • Cyber and security: compromised AI systems, prompt injection, credentials, data or connected tools.
  • Autonomous-agent actions: AI agents changing records, sending messages, triggering workflows or acting outside intended permissions.
  • Operational loss: downtime, remediation expense, runaway usage costs or other business interruption.

Does ordinary business insurance already cover AI?

Sometimes a traditional policy may respond, sometimes it may not, and sometimes the answer depends heavily on the specific policy wording and facts of the loss. That is why a business should not assume that “cyber insurance” or a general liability policy automatically covers every AI-related event.

What a licensed insurance professional should review

A licensed professional can look at how the company uses AI, whether it builds AI products or merely uses third-party tools, what data the systems access, whether AI interacts with customers, and whether autonomous systems can take consequential actions. The professional can then determine which insurance markets and policy forms are actually available.

Is there one best AI insurance policy?

No. Coverage depends on the company, industry, AI use, jurisdiction, insurer appetite and policy language. A small professional-services business using generative AI internally may need something very different from a software company deploying autonomous agents.

Where this marketplace fits

LunarQuote is being built as a single starting point: a business explains its AI use at a high level, then the request can be routed to a licensed insurance professional. The marketplace does not itself bind coverage and the public form is not an insurance application.
