Industrial AI insurance questions
Factory AI can affect production quality, equipment, and worker safety. The point is to help a buyer describe the operation accurately before speaking with a licensed insurance professional.
How the operation works
A factory may let a model flag defects, recommend machine adjustments, or control a robotic cell. The level of automation and who approves changes determine how an incident can unfold. Ask who builds the system, who runs it, where it is used, and whether it can act without a person approving each step. Those details are more useful than the label “AI insurance” alone.
Three loss scenarios to discuss
- A vision model misses a defective lot that later reaches customers.
- An automated setpoint damages machinery or interrupts a line.
- A robotic cell moves unexpectedly while a technician is servicing it.
These are examples for planning a conversation, not predictions of what any particular insurer would cover. A claim turns on its facts and the full issued policy wording.
What to gather before a review
Bring lot traceability, machine change logs, safety validation, maintenance records, and supplier contracts. Include existing policy declarations and endorsements, customer promises, vendor agreements, revenue from this activity, and any known prior incidents. Keep a plain description of the actual system behavior alongside the technical documentation.
Where a licensed professional may look
A discussion might include product liability, property and equipment, business interruption, and technology errors and omissions. Policy names alone are not enough: definitions, exclusions, limits, territory, reporting conditions, and who is insured all matter. Ask which gaps remain after your current policies and contracts are reviewed.
Controls worth documenting
Separate safety controls from optimization; test changes before deployment; keep a manual stop and clear maintenance lockout procedures. If the deployment changes, update those records and tell the person reviewing the risk. Evidence of how the business actually operates can help make an insurance conversation more precise.
