AI data center insurance questions

Compute infrastructure has property, outage, supplier, and data custody exposures. The point is to help a buyer describe the operation accurately before speaking with a licensed insurance professional.

How the operation works

An AI company may own a data center, rent racks, or rely entirely on a cloud provider. The assets and contracts determine who carries hardware and service risks. Ask who builds the system, who runs it, where it is used, and whether it can act without a person approving each step. Those details are more useful than the label “AI insurance” alone.

Three loss scenarios to discuss

  • A cooling failure damages expensive computing equipment.
  • A power incident interrupts customer inference services.
  • A tenant and provider disagree about responsibility for lost data.

These are examples for planning a conversation, not predictions of what any particular insurer would cover. A claim turns on its facts and the full issued policy wording.

What to gather before a review

Bring asset schedules, cloud contracts, power and cooling design, recovery tests, and dependency maps. Include existing policy declarations and endorsements, customer promises, vendor agreements, revenue from this activity, and any known prior incidents. Keep a plain description of the actual system behavior alongside the technical documentation.

Where a licensed professional may look

A discussion might include property and equipment, business interruption, cyber, and contractual service liability. Policy names alone are not enough: definitions, exclusions, limits, territory, reporting conditions, and who is insured all matter. Ask which gaps remain after your current policies and contracts are reviewed.

Controls worth documenting

Test backups and recovery; document physical maintenance; understand single supplier dependencies. If the deployment changes, update those records and tell the person reviewing the risk. Evidence of how the business actually operates can help make an insurance conversation more precise.
